Arrest Made in Ibaraki Prefecture Crash; Driver Confesses to Attempted Murder, Say Police

A man suspected of attempted murder after driving his car into a crowd in front of the Hitachi city government building in Ibaraki Prefecture on Dec. 6 is set to face a new arrest warrant on Thursday. Investigators have identified the suspect as 53-year-old Yutaka Mashiko and believe he intentionally targeted the crowd gathered for an event at the building at around 1 p.m. that day. The incident left four people injured, including a woman in her 40s with a broken left leg.

Following the initial crash, Mashiko’s car reportedly made its way to the Tokai municipal government building, located about 15 kilometers from the first crash site, and rammed into the main entrance. The suspect was apprehended on the same day for alleged damage to the government building. In police custody, Mashiko confessed to committing both crimes and cited personal conflicts with his mother and other relatives as the motive behind his actions.
