Inter Miami has made a major signing by bringing on board former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suarez from Gremio for the upcoming 2024 Major League Soccer season. The 36-year-old Uruguay international has inked a one-year deal with Miami – a club co-owned by football legend David Beckham. Suarez will be reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets as he joins the ranks of Inter Miami CF.
According to Miami’s official website, the club announced the signing, stating: “Inter Miami CF announced (on Friday) that it has signed UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and Conmebol Copa America winner and five-time LaLiga champion Luis Suarez to a contract running through the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.”
Having been named the best player and best striker in the Brazilian league this season, Suarez has had an exceptional year with Gremio. He scored 26 goals and provided 17 assists, which contributed to Gremio’s regional league and cup double win. Miami co-owner Beckham expressed his excitement about the new signing, stating, “We are delighted to have a player of Luis’ quality and passion for the game join our club. He joins a squad that is inspiring the next generation, and we look forward to seeing him take to the field with both former teammates and young players from our academy.”
Suarez’s career has seen him move from Ajax to Liverpool for £22.8 million in 2011 before making a high-profile move to Barcelona in 2014 for a reported fee of £65 million. At Barcelona, he achieved success, winning the Champions League, four LaLiga titles, and four Copa del Reys. He made 283 appearances for the club, scoring 195 goals and providing 113 assists. After leaving Barcelona, Suarez had a successful stint at Atletico Madrid, where he won another LaLiga title. He returned to Uruguay, playing for club side Nacional in 2022 before moving to Gremio in December 2022.
Suarez’s arrival is expected to bring a new level of experience and talent to Inter Miami CF as the club gears up for the 2024 MLS season.
