Tomiko Itooka, a remarkable 115-year-old woman hailing from Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan, has recently earned the title of the oldest person in Japan. This honor comes in the wake of the recent passing of the previous titleholder, a 116-year-old individual, confirmed by the health ministry.

Originally born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Itooka is the eldest of three siblings and is said to have been an active member of a volleyball club during her student years, according to the city where she resides today.

Upon entering a nursing home in Ashiya in 2019, she was still able to move independently. However, as time has passed, she now requires assistance in a wheelchair when heading to the living room for her meals, as reported by the staff at the nursing home.

It has also been mentioned that Itooka takes pleasure in consuming sweets and has developed a fondness for the probiotic beverage Calpis, adding some joy to her daily routine, according to the caring staff.

As is tradition, her birthday is celebrated each year, and this year, Ashiya Mayor Ryosuke Takashima, who made history as the youngest mayor in Japan when he was elected at 26, came to extend his well-wishes.

The passing of the previous record-holder, Fusa Tatsumi, a 116-year-old resident of Kashiwara, Osaka Prefecture, paved the way for Itooka to claim the title of the oldest living person in Japan. Tatsumi passed away at 9:25 a.m. on Tuesday, marking the end of her remarkable journey.

However, it has been reported that Itooka is currently battling the flu, and the nursing home has made the decision to delay informing her of the new title until she has fully recovered.
