The Latest on Trump’s Michigan Supreme Court Victory

Former President Donald Trump has received approval from the Michigan Supreme Court for their denial of an effort to remove his name from the 2024 election ballot through a 14th Amendment disqualification. The attempt was criticized by Trump as a “pathetic gambit” to rig the election in a recent public rebuke.

The Michigan Supreme Court recently ruled against a push to block Trump from appearing on the state’s 2024 presidential ballot, citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. This clause prohibits anyone from holding office if they’ve been involved in an “insurrection or rebellion” against the government.

In contrast, the Colorado Supreme Court last week made a ruling to remove Trump from the Colorado primary ballot and disqualify him from running for president. Nevertheless, Trump’s legal team plans to challenge the Colorado decision in the U.S. Supreme Court, expecting a favorable ruling considering Trump has not been charged with insurrection or rebellion.

On the heels of the court decision, Trump publicly praised the ruling on Truth Social while condemning the efforts to derail his political path. He acknowledged the failure of the “scheme” to remove him from various states’ election ballots and reiterated his claim that the 2020 election win was unfairly taken from him, resulting in economic destruction under President Biden.

Trump accused his political opponents of utilizing the Department of Justice to target him and cause problems for his campaign. Along with several civil and criminal cases, he faces more than a dozen lawsuits against his presidential candidacy using the 14th Amendment as a basis for disqualification.

The Michigan Supreme Court’s decision ensures Trump’s name will remain on the Michigan ballot, a critical development in a key battleground state. The court’s order on Dec. 27 seemingly denied an appeal against the former president on technical grounds.

Amidst this victory, the Colorado Supreme Court previously ruled against Trump based on the 14th Amendment’s disqualification clause. The unprecedented ruling labeled Trump as the first candidate ineligible to run for the presidency in U.S. history.

However, there seems to be an ongoing conflict of interest in the Colorado ruling, as one of the dissenting justices argued that Trump’s due process rights may have been violated. There are expectations for the case to be further contested due to concerns of procedural due process in declaring an individual disqualified from public office without proper legal proceedings.

The Michigan Supreme Court dismissing the attempt to prevent Trump from appearing on the 2024 ballot boosts his political prospects in the run-up to the elections. The Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling was a blow, but the Michigan court’s decision now means that the former president can embrace his future presidential campaign while continuing to navigate through numerous courtroom battles. The fight moves to the highest court in the land.

For those in the circle of Donald Trump, the legal challenges add fuel to the fire, but it is important to keep in mind that every citizen deserves a democratic, lawful, and fair presidential election. The future for Donald Trump, the Michigan Supreme Court, and the legal battles still lies ahead, and it’s with the U.S Supreme Court that the conclusion will be set.

After the action in Michigan, on the tumultuous day following Christmas, the future is in the minds of all who aim to witness change.
