Trump Doubts Biden’s Mental Aptitude as 2024 Presidential Election Approaches

US Political

President Trump voiced his incredulity at the idea of President Joe Biden being the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential race. In an interview with Breitbart, he cited Biden’s cognitive decline in recent years as a significant factor. Concerns about Biden’s mental health have also been raised by American voters, with a poll showing that only 38 percent of respondents rated President Biden as mentally sound enough to serve as president. In contrast, 46 percent rated Trump as having the mental soundness to serve as president. Another poll from NBC News asked respondents about President Biden’s mental and physical health, revealing that 74 percent expressed “major” or “moderate” concerns. Vice President Kamala Harris is being considered as a potential successor, but President Trump highlighted her policy weaknesses that could make Democrats drop her as a nominee.

He noted that during the 2020 race, President Biden promised Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) to choose a black woman as his running mate in exchange for the lawmaker’s support. This helped President Biden win the Democratic nomination at the time. The path to the Democratic nomination in 2024 remains uncertain, with other potential contenders such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Republican lawmakers have been vocal about President Biden’s cognitive decline, with Rep. Ronny Jackson, a former White House physician, asserting that Biden can no longer perform the duties of the presidency. Other GOP members, such as Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, have also raised questions about Biden’s mental capabilities. In contrast, President Trump has consistently defended his cognitive abilities, even releasing a statement from his doctor affirming his excellent health.

Despite ongoing concerns about President Biden’s mental health, a December update by Morning Consult showed that President Trump has a two-point lead over him in the polls. In addition, President Biden is trailing President Trump in seven key states, reflecting the voters’ declining confidence in his leadership. As the 2024 race draws closer, the issue of mental health is likely to remain a focal point, and the Democratic nomination may become a “free-for-all” as numerous candidates seek the top position on the ballot.
