In a statement just before 5 p.m., Edmonton Police spokeswoman Cheryl Voordenhout said a man allegedly fled the scene of a bank robbery at an ATB Financial branch in the area of 127 Avenue and 97 Street.

The man then entered a residence that was not attached to him at 83rd Street and 130th Avenue. There was an unconfirmed number of hostages in the house at the time.

In an update later on Monday evening, Voordenhout said a woman who was a lone hostage was freed around 5:30 p.m. after efforts by professional negotiators.

“Police entered the residence around 6 pm and found a 36-year-old male suspect dead. There was no one else in the house,” she said.

The director of law enforcement was informed of the death and determined that the investigation would remain with the Edmonton Police Service.
